Hi fellas,Been a month since i blogged. This really seems to be the opening lines of so many blogs I have been reading recently. Funny how many people like myself are finding their own pile of work big enough so when you go upto them about blogging all they say is “No thanks!” I would said the same thing if you would have asked me that yesterday. Anyway back to business. I bought a new phone last month. You must have known it if you had been watching you cricket ! Sure its the model in the title. Motorola W230.I actually went to a forum and posted that I bought it and no sooner was I getting emails requesting more details and some “I bought it too” mails which were very sweet responses really. So why make people wait for my reply mails while I can put this up in y blog and let it remain for eternity. So here goes my review.
REVIEW
The phone has been an absolute delight. I had originally been planning and decided on buying Samsung’s C160 or C170 for Rs.2000. Both had FM radio along with GPRS – two of my most needed features. That was until this bolt from the blue from Motorola. This model actually came out two days before me buying it and it has a terrific feature of micro SD slot something unheard of in this price range. Along with a mp3 player it was a cool music phone with some good looks to boot(The blue keypad light combined with the black phone at night looks awesome!) So i decided on it at first sight. Price was 3k but you can get it for 2.9k. According to me the best value for money mobile in the market today.I’l separately list its various features here.
Messaging
Most people are scared of Motorola when it comes to messaging but it’s not that difficult actually. If you are switching from Nokia you will probbaly have a problem for the first month. But most young people should catch up. Some old ones might find it very difficult to change but I dont expect them to use the messaging much anyway. But if u are a nokia lover and are reluctant to change about speed of text messaging better stick to Nokia. But as they say Change is good!
User Interface
Its decent and not at all bad. Nokia is probably better by about 5% but that’s not such a big difference because Nokia has no phones in this price range with this much features. So if you are buying for less don’t go for Nokia. Go for motorola or samsung.
Music Experience
Coming to the biggest feature of this phone music experience is great. Ofcourse if you are too much used to ipod or the Sony Walkman series this isn’t music phone for you. But if you like listening to some good music with some good clarity and quality then its for you. Headphones are pretty loud. I use them in crowded buses and still find them good to hear. Usually shops give you a 256mb memory card for 3k and its upgradable to 2gb. So use it! Speakers are good. You can set mp3 alarms which is what i wake upto daily nowadays. And you have mp3 ring tones as well
FM
FM radio is clear and sound is a bit louder than mp3 player. Its certainly better than the FM in Nokia 6030. You can also record FM and use it as alarms.
Specs and Links
1. Specs from Motorola Website
2. Check out the phone in Univercell
SO thats basically the gist of it. If u need more info just send in your comments and i’l reply. Also do comment if you got a different view!

Update on 31/3/2008:
Bought a crystal case for the phone for Rs.20. Phone looks cooler inside the case. Also lends the sturdiness of Nokia phones. Motorola phones aren’t usually sturdy and strong as far as the panel and outer design goes.

Dear Ramji,
I bought a new MOTOYUVA W230 mobile phone for my daughter. I went through your blog on this phone and resolve lot many issues which the phone vendor could not address. In fact I bought this phone from Univercell,T.Nagar, Chennai three weeks back.
The issue I am facing currently is as follows;
I am able to connect the phone to my PC as storage device and able to trasfer MP3 & jpg files, ofcourse, the file size is around 168 X 120. I able to disconnect from pc and use it as phone. I am using 2gb Sandisk Memory card. My problem is the phone is not recoganise the storage area under Music Library.
In fact I tried the solution provided in another blog,ie.,
use the left softkey on phone mode
enter into Music Library,
Press Middle button with Red Ring to
a sub-memu
select the Storage – memory card area
This process does not work in my phone.
Can you tell me how to enable this option in W230
regards

I’ve never heard about MotoYuva phones before
March 8, 2008 at 12:02 am
Ha ha! I think you should know about it by now!
March 8, 2008 at 4:06 am
I bought one last tuesday but I am having a connectivity problem when connecting with the bundled USB cable to my PC. It does detect the phone for a brief moment and then it says that the new hardware cant e used. An idea ? Were u able to connect the phone with your PC ?
March 8, 2008 at 4:15 pm
I faced the problem once. Follow these simpe steps to ensure good connectivity.
1. Connect one end of data cable to the phone.
2. Then connect it to the USB port of your PC.
3. There will be a message displayed on your phone asking if you want to connect your phone as storage device.
4. Click yes.
5. phone will switch off for a while and u can upload songs and other data to the phone memory card.
6. If you face the same problem disconnect the data cable at both ends(both phone and PC) and start afresh from step1.

acha dude can u tell me how much does the extend able 2gb card cost??
thankyou
March 13, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Dude i dunno much about it to be honest. Im using a 256mb card I got when i bought the phone. I heard a 1Gb memory card is around Rs.400. So that comes to around Rs.800 for a 2GB. Make sure u mention the phone model while u r buying the memory card. Memory cards for Sony phones are a bit different(and costly!

Yes,
I had got my MotoYuva w230 a month ago, in Feb. 8. At first, I found this as a hard one. But, now, after one month, I find this very good.
Some major problems that a naive user would found:
1. Losing the menus:- There’s a total of 3 menus in almost every screen. One left, one right and a centre key one. Most of the users will not find out the centre key menu.
2. Difficulty in message typing:- character is in ‘*’ key. Also, Caps are changed through ‘0′ key. Also, there’s no way to insert an or newline character.
3. Area Info display (SIM dependent):- In ‘info srvc setup’ menu, we need to add an active channel ‘50′ to see the area info display well.
4. When the active memory is Phone memory, we cannot connect the phone to the computer.
After using the phone for a month, I found this as the best phone that you can afford in this price. I got it for Rs.2900/- in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
I love this phone very much!
March 13, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Errata 1: … Difficulty in message typing:- THE SPACE character is …
Errata 2: … Also, there’s no way to insert an ENTER or newline character

okay thanks i m gonna buy it tomorro!
March 13, 2008 at 5:32 pm
BTW n e problems of hangover becuz of memory card?? like after we insert the 2gb n its filled more than 1 gb?
March 13, 2008 at 7:21 pm
@dinith: Hangovers are common in all phones. I dont think this would be any exception especially if u load it to 1GB. There may be slight delays but i trust motorola to have the software to handle it
March 13, 2008 at 9:07 pm
@vishnu: hey some of the info u said are new to me! have to try those out. Thanks mate!
March 15, 2008 at 8:08 am
hi Is this phone GSM-MODEM enabled?
March 15, 2008 at 11:30 am
how to load music in internal memoray of mobile in 2gb any proceedure please
March 15, 2008 at 3:30 pm
@vicki: its not modem enabled in the sense that you cannot actually connect it to a PC. But you can browse in mobile through GPRS and its pretty fast(normal mobile speed)
March 15, 2008 at 3:39 pm
@ikbal: Thats easy. Just connect the phone to your PC using the data cable provided(there’s already a comment regarding that). And once you connect it, just copy the music files in mp3 format to the MUSIC folder. And pictures and wallpapers, you can copy it to the PICTURES folder.
March 18, 2008 at 4:27 am
i heard aout moto w270 having same features as w230 had, but w270 comes with a clamshell
can u please tell from where can i buy w270 in mumbai or pune?/ and if u have any inffo about its price do tell me!!!! reply soon
March 18, 2008 at 5:09 am
@manish: I don’t thin w270 is released in India yet. It certainly looks good with all features of w230. I would have bought that in the first place if it had been available. Officially I dont think it has been released in India. maybe you can try ordering it online. But beware of duplicates mate!
March 19, 2008 at 7:06 am
Thanks for the review dude.
I’m getting this tomorrow
March 19, 2008 at 7:07 am
This does charge from the USB right?
March 19, 2008 at 5:06 pm
@Bajal: Awesome dude! And ofcourse it charges while connected to the PC through USB.
March 20, 2008 at 6:06 am
Hello,
I am not able to download any files to Moble, because PC doesnot recognize the phone even after installing the drivers given at the site. Please inform me How did you connected the phone to the PC
March 21, 2008 at 8:14 am
@Rajan: There is no need for any driver software to connect w230 phone to computer. You can connect it as default USB drive. I have already given the instructions for this in this same comment section. Scroll up and take a look
March 24, 2008 at 5:53 am
what’s the model number for the data cable? Same as for V3x and L6?
I bought mine in Singapore for $69.90, without memory card nor data cable. but got free headset.
March 24, 2008 at 2:06 pm
how i connect internet to my pc with
motoyuvaw230 mobile phone.I tried so
many times to connect but iam getting
a message like as “MODEM ERROR”.Please
e-mail me modem OR give me the reason
March 24, 2008 at 6:41 pm
@asif: Hey you cannot use this phone as a modem to your PC. It doesn’t support that feature!
March 24, 2008 at 6:48 pm
@singapore! : I don’t know if it’s bargain or not. You get phone+data cable+headset+256mb memory card for Rs.3000 thats $75. That’s here in India. As far as the data cable goes I don’t know about V3 and L6 data cables because I haven’t used them. But i think it’ll be pretty much the same. One end of the cable is the normal USB to PC and the other end is the mini USB to the phone. And if you really want to know my cable has the following specs printed on the cable!
SKN6253A

I own MotoYuva W230 and am also struggling to do the net.
The W230 seems to have builtin modem.
First of all we need to install the drivers from http://www.motorola.com/support/w230 and download the file from link USB modem drivers. Install it and it will create a virtual COM port for the modem.
Open HyperTerminal and try to connect to the port it. You can check the actual port number from “device manager” on WinXP.
Once you connect it will say “AT command Interpreter ready”
Here you can give commands
at+cgatt
OK
at+cgact
OK
at+cgdata
OK
after last command if your GPRS is active, the icon on topline will change to connected.
This hints to presence of GPRS modem but I am still not able to connect using my phone.
Please update anyone can indicate way forward.
March 27, 2008 at 10:34 am
Dear Ramji, can you give information about
Battry life wrt usage for this mobile.
March 27, 2008 at 3:53 pm
@Nilesh: I find battery life to be good but not the best (or the worst!) Once fully charged I use it for about 2 days while making calls and listening to mp3 player/fm through headphones. If you are the person who listens to music a lot then I would say a battery life of 1 day or 1.5 days is assured based on usage. If you use the loud speakers then obviously battery will drain out faster.
Also the phone charges when connected to the PC while transferring songs to its memory card. Altogether it has an average battery life of 1.5 days
March 27, 2008 at 5:27 pm
@pskmreddy: Im actually surprised! I didn’t know till now that this phone could be used as a modem. Its sure worth a try. I’l give it a try soon. If anyone else tries it and it works please post your experience! It’ll help a lot of w230 users.

March 31, 2008 at 11:19 am
a few questions:
1. Does it support Java applications?
2. Does the alarm support snooze?
3. Can it record a memo or meeting? What is the duration? Limited by memory?
March 31, 2008 at 1:28 pm
1. Motorola Technical Service said that it can support java. but so far i still haven’t managed to get any java apps or games into it.
2. Yes
3. The calendar can record events. U mean the duration that the phone will keep the events for? u can set the duration to “never delete”.
March 31, 2008 at 7:50 pm
@dralf: I’m surprised to hear that Motorola says it supports Java Apps(pleasant surprise??) Because it doesn’t have something like a file manager that lets you install java Apps right. I don’t think this can phone support Java apps. But if it does do let me know.
March 31, 2008 at 7:54 pm
@EN: I first thought you meant something along the lines of voice recording! lol.. Anyway it has a neat calendar where you can record all sorts of reminders. And either you can delete them yourself or let the phone clean old reminders every few weeks(number of weeks/months can be specified) Only thing I don’t like about the calendar is that, every time you try to store a new reminder it asks for a number of things Like time date, alarm, starts from, ends on etc. Motorola could have programmed some default settings to some fields that would have made it easier to store reminders very fast.
April 1, 2008 at 1:42 am
Ramji, maybe u can also fire off an email to the motorola technical support at ur side to confirm whether it really does support java? i suspect that the cso on my side isn’t that well informed on this phone.
April 5, 2008 at 12:53 pm
The USB connection is not working after using all of the possible workarounds. The phone is not up to the mark.
April 5, 2008 at 5:03 pm
@Debsuvra Ghosh: Im truly amazed. I’m able to connect it and transfer files easily using the procedure I had listed out in my previous reply to you. I think you should contact Motorola service as soon as possible and get this problem sorted out. Because it’s probably the most important feature of this phone and you shouldn’t be missing out on that after paying all the money to buy it.
April 5, 2008 at 5:04 pm
@dralf: Sorry man didn’t find the time to mail them. Will mail them today or tomm.

Great phone, but cannot install Java Apps on the phone. Best option for us will be flood Motorola customer support with queries on Java Apps. That way (hopefully) support will start working on driver or firmware update for Java Apps to work.
Here is the Motorola Customer Support link

Hey…….I hav a little problem with my 230!!! The call rings on the phone even when the headset is connected…..how do i change it so that it can be heard in the earphone & not on the set itself!!!
April 9, 2008 at 2:46 pm
@melvin: Read all the comments in this post. I have posted a comment outlining the steps you need to do to connect your phone properly to the PC and transfer files. It works for me.
April 9, 2008 at 2:50 pm
@lucky: The problem actually lies with your picture resolution. The phone cannot decompress pictures which are high resolution like 1024*768 etc. The maximum resolution I have tried is about 600*600. And it works fine in that resolution or smaller. Also make sure your picture is in JPEG format. I haven’t tried BMP yet but i suspect it might work too.
You can download mobile wallpapers easily from the Net. They are available in the prescribed resolutions suitable for a mobile phone screen. I would suggest this link. http://mobile9.com/ That site contains wallpapers, screensavers and all kind of mobile phone stuff. Almost all the wallpapers given there work perfectly on this phone.
April 9, 2008 at 2:57 pm
@Parinitha: It is actually a bug in the phone I think(or maybe the Motorola engineers made it this way!!) All nokia phones have this capability to automatically divert the ringing tones to the headset instead of the speakers. But it cannot be done in this phone. I have tried changing so many options including changing the phone line etc but am not able to do it.
Best way out of this is, if you are listening to songs and you don’t want to anyone else to hear your phone ringing, you can set the volume to be less. The headset volume(for listening to songs) and the speaker volume(in ring style) are different. So you can set your ringing volume to be lesser while listening to songs. Or you can set your ringing tone to something like a beep sound( or set it in vibration mode!)
P.S.: If the phone isn’t smart enough, you should make up for it!
April 15, 2008 at 11:46 am

April 22, 2008 at 8:07 am
hello to all w230 lovers! i just recently bought my own moto (for SD120). to be honest, i never heard of this unit before.
while i was looking for a nokia/samsung, i happened to see the w230. i was curious about the phone because i never used a moto before. i don’t mind that the phone has no cam feature in it; i already have my canon hehe
anyway, i would like to ask anyone what are the plus to the phone? how can i use the google/web access? to be honest, it’s my first time to have this phone. what are also some tips that you can share?
i’m still planning to buy a case for the phone and a micro sd ( it wasn’t included in the package).
i already have a usb cord with a micro usb on the other tip from a canon camera. can i use it on my phone?
thanks for the time!

April 26, 2008 at 4:18 pm
hi. i’ve just bought this phone and haven’t been charged straight out of the box. i’ve successfully transferred about 10 music files and some pictures to a new microSD card even when the phone already prompted a battery low signal.
just a thought.
i’m interested though with the PC CHARGING DRIVER which allows you to charge your phone using your PC and a USB cable. haven’t tried this yet, though.
also, the unit i bought didn’t come with a usb cable bundled, just a headset free. what i did is use another brand’s usb cable, and it worked!
anyone had problems with the bundled headset? it plays super low you have to strain to hear it..
you have to stick the jack a little loose for it to increase in volume but then, i fear the possibility that it would come off loose at the slightest movement. thanks!
April 29, 2008 at 5:56 pm
@acre: Hey it’s a surprise your phone didnt come with the USB cable. You sure it’s the same model?
And it doesn’t need a special driver for the USB charging through the computer. That’s an inbuilt feature. Just connect your phone to the computer using a proper USB data cable and the phone will charge even when you are transferring files into it. Just make sure you use a good data cable though. I know it worked for you with a cable of some other brand but make sure the pin fits properly into the phone’s USB slot. Because slight voltage differences/spikes due to the cable can damage your phone.
And about the headphones, I found something like what you mentioned. But it’s not that bad. Especially when you are in a quiet surroundings or when the volume’s up(maximum) you can hear the music well. Just try pressing the ear plugs a little more into your ear. Trust me they do fit in tight and really helps in cutting down the surrounding noise. Improves music experience a lot especially in crowded buses, which is where I use the phone most of the time.
May 11, 2008 at 2:45 pm
i just had this phone two days ago…
it is a cool phone got its price range…
but i find it bad that the battery wont last the whole day while listening to music… is it normal? or should i have this unit checked?

May 24, 2008 at 7:51 pm
When I synchronize my cellphone with windows media player 11, it happen successfully, but I’m unable to find in music/Music library. So i cannot play my added mp3. I’m able to use those mp3 as ring tone, because that places it I can browse through additional media storage device. May I know how to add mp3 to my cellphone so I can see it in Music library.
May 26, 2008 at 4:34 am
@bikash: The only reason this I can think of is maybe your mp3 songs are in folders. So you need to open those folders in Music Library to actually play those files. Check if thats the case. My advice would be to not use the Media Player synchronization option to transfer mp3 files to your phone(even though this is what is recommended in the phone’s manual) I tried it but it sometimes does not work. A better option would be for you to just copy-paste the files directly from your PC to your phone’s memory card. The memory card will be displayed as a separate drive in your “My Computer” window(if you’re using Windows that is!)

Hello Sir,
I am using Motoyuva W270 And I want to lesten F.M. Redio On Speaker Without Using Headphone Is this Possible? if Yes P/z Sent me a Software In my Male Id.
Thanks.
June 4, 2008 at 6:37 pm
@Vipul : I have no idea about W270. But most of it is similar to W230 I heard. So it won’t be much of a difference in operating too. While the radio is playing just go to Options and select “Turn on Loudspeaker”. That should do it really.
I don’t know why you need a software for this. Besides Motorola W230 & W270 do not support any software other than the ones already built into it.
June 10, 2008 at 7:09 am
Can i put some extra games or any other apps in w230.if o plz post or email me.(rrahul1993@yahoo.co.in)
June 10, 2008 at 4:22 pm
@Rahul: Nope you can’t! The phone’s got no file manager and no applications menu. Basically no feature that lets you install some application or game. There might be a way to download games through GPRS. I haven’t tried it yet. So you can check out if any mobile site’s offering such games designed for Motorola W230.
June 15, 2008 at 10:28 am

I can put mp3 files into the memory card using the USB cable but the phone doesn’t read the SD card. The songs are not displayed in the music library. I have formated the sd card and tried many times and the mp3 files don’t exceed 320 kbps bit rate.
Someone help me!
June 21, 2008 at 3:02 am
In addition:
I removed the sd card and put it into a motorola rokr and the the musics play normally. The sd card is a SanDisk and came with the phone, so there’s no problem with it. I don’t know what to do…
June 22, 2008 at 7:48 am
what to do for connecting W230 mobile to connect to computer?
and get net connection
June 23, 2008 at 8:46 am
@Joe: I think the problem might be with how you remove your phone(data cable) from your PC once you have transferred the files. Use the Safely remove hardware option in Windows. Your problem happened once for me but it got resolved the next time I transferred files. I suspect it is because of the thing I have mentioned earlier
June 23, 2008 at 8:48 am
@dinesh.t: The accepted opinion about this is that it is not possible with this phone. Anyway to get a clearer idea read all the comments in this post and you’ll get to know about it.

June 28, 2008 at 4:46 pm
@Abhijit: No USB driver is needed for the phone. It is supposed to be connected as an external drive like a USB pen drive. Refer this comments section for instructions on how to connect the phone to your PC
June 28, 2008 at 4:47 pm
@Ni: I am yet to find out a way to do that myself. So I have stopped recording FM. The quality isn’t that good like mp3 so its not a big deal.
June 28, 2008 at 4:48 pm
@VJ: I haven’t found any way and I do not think there is any.

July 1, 2008 at 4:58 pm
@LJ: I have already outlined the methods which you need to follow to make it work. That is what worked for me. If you are still having problems with it, I think you should contact a Motorola Service Center.
@Ashiq: I don’t know why you pressed ‘#’ ! But anyway you should not copy your files to the drive in general. You should copy your mp3 files to the ‘Music’ folder and image files to the ‘Pictures’ folder. Both the folders will be already present in the memory card. If not create a folder like that and save your mp3 files there. Also check whether the folder name is exactly ‘Music’ Because if it is not the exact name(with exact upper case and lower case alphabets) then the phone will not detect that folder. Do check these and see if it works. I’l check this out and tell you if I find anything related to how your problem can be solved. Because I hear many of them facing the same problem.

Sorry I did not respond after my post on March 31. I lost track of this blog.
Yeah my question was about voice recording during meetings.
Sort of easy way to record and then transcribe the minutes.

How can one send SMS to a number that’s not in the contacts list? After I type my message and press OK, I only see the list of contacts. How can I type a free number there?
July 14, 2008 at 11:58 am
@Sridhar: That’s easy. First type in your message. Then press ‘Send’. You’ll get your contact list but you ignore that and press ‘Options’ which is the button in the middle of the direction keys. In the Options menu you will get an option ‘Enter your number’. Select that and key in your number. When you press ok, you will see that the number has been added to the contact list which you saw earlier. Now you can use that to send SMS to that number.
Yeah I know it is a kinda round-about way but thats how Motorola have designed the phone!

@ravichandran:
hi,
once u install the drivers “correctly” and connect phone to comp, then make sure the screen is on. the phone will ask “use as storage device” and u will kindly answer “yes”.
and then the comp. will give you a window similar to the one when u connect ur thumb drive.
From here it is simple….

Hi ramji someone told that every time after a song is over we have to press the play button to play the next song.Is it so or will it automatically play the next song in the list.
August 23, 2008 at 2:00 pm
@ anand
that will happens if we play only one single song, but if we play the song from the playlist, songs will be played continously. to create playlist, simply make a folder with several songs within in.
hey, could somebody tell my how to use this phone as pc modem? is there somebody has the driver? or maybe i can’t use it as modem?

September 15, 2008 at 3:43 am
@Deepthi: You can upload it by directly connecting the phone as a USB Pen Drive to your computer. This can be done by using the data cable provided along with the phone. After doing that you can copy the files to your memory card. For more info, go through the comments section of this same post.

Hi Ashiq; and everyone, i have the same problem with you. but i’ve discovered that you should change the storage device setting from Phone memory to external memory, so that the music library would be able to detect the mp3s in the SD Card.

First ever post ever on a message board… wow.
ISSUE WITH NOT SEEING SONGS IN SD CARD MUSIC FOLDER:
If you go into the music library and only see your ring tones, hit the middle button, and there should be an option for “Switch storage device”. Click this and your music will appear. The phone will also handle folders so you can keep it nicely sorted.

can anyone tell me wich other format works? or why does this happens
thanks.
December 24, 2008 at 11:57 pm
I also tried BMP and this time it said “not enough memory to do this operation” but the images were 100 or 200 kb, do they have to be smaller? please help!
December 29, 2008 at 10:31 am
@Maria: Yeah the images have to be of a smaller resolution. Try JPEG with smaller resolutions of 480×480. Don’t use BMP because it usually takes up a lot more memory. You can easily scale your bigger image into smaller resolutions using Photoshop or even MS Paint. Then you can save it as JPEG file.
The second constraint in this phone deals with memory size of the pictures. The phone has only a certain amount of RAM memory. So it can’t decode pictures which are of a bigger size. Try pictures which are of a lesser size.
I would recommend downloading images specially meant for mobile wallpapers. They work well. Or if you are using your own images, make sure you scale the image to lesser resolutions. And use JPEG format.

@Vasantha: You can use GPRS for browsing in the phone but it is just not possible to use it to access Net for PC. Refer earlier comments regarding this

January 5, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I brought a w230 2 days ago. The problem is, i get the menu for playlist creation when the memory in use is fone memory but when I change it to external memory, there is no option for playlist creation. How do we create a playlist for files on sd card?
January 5, 2009 at 3:23 pm
@Tushant: To create playlists for files stored in your memory card do this. Create separate folders in your memory card’s Music folder. Each folder is a playlist. Hence if you want to create different playlists, create as many folders and save the files you want in your playlists in the corresponding folders.

My mobile phone (W230) is not working.
1. I was typing a text message, suddenly it went OFF(switched OFF).
2. Then I tried switching it ON with ON/OFF button, but in vein.
3. This has happened few times before, but until now, I could switch it back ON.
4. I removed battery from case, replaced it back and TRIED switching it ON,
Nothing happened.
5. I then tried charging, a singly lit backlight appears under Switch ON/OFF
button of the keypad(top right corner of keypad)
6. I regularly use the handset, listen to music and send text messages.
Please help me with my mobile phone
January 26, 2009 at 4:14 pm
@Risi: I suspect your phone switched off due to low battery. Since you say that the backlight is glowing when you try to charge the battery, I think your phone is working fine. While you are charging and the backlight is glowing over the ON/OFF button, press that ON/OFF button for a long time. Long enough till your phone eventually switches on. If it doesn’t switch on, take your finger off it for a while and try pressing the button again for a long time.
If the above solution doesn’t work, I suspect there might be something seriously faulty with your phone. Contact the Motorola service center at the earliest. From what I have heard here in India, they are replacing the W230 handsets if you encountered any genuine problems. Hope you get your phone up and about very soon.
January 28, 2009 at 1:45 pm
@Ramji:
I’m happy to have my cell back n working.
I tried your solution and I’m happy to say, it worked.
honestly, I had tried for several times before (on 26th) but couldn’t get it to work.
Cause: I had kept for charging through usb from my computer.
It showed complete charge, but just when I started typing it went OFF.
from now on I’d rather use DC adapter to charge my cell rather than through computer.
Thanks Ramji for quick reply.

@Risi: Yeah USB charging cannot always be trusted. Glad that you found my reply useful. Thats why I keep this blog for. Helping ppl out…

February 11, 2009 at 1:20 pm
ramji ,
how do i incerease the internal memory of my phone because i can only store 20 birthday reminders in the calender ……..
February 11, 2009 at 1:24 pm
ramji ,
pls i want a reply for this…..
February 11, 2009 at 1:40 pm
@Yogeshe: You cannot increase the size of the phone’s internal memory. But can you store only 20 birthday reminders? Though I haven’t tried it, I think you can store more than that. Just go to each of the dates in the calendar on which you want to create a birthday reminder. Then add a reminder on each date separately along with other settings. I do this only and I think you can store more than 20 such entries.
February 12, 2009 at 12:51 pm
hi ramji,
thanks for ur reply ,ya i have done the same way and since it is got only 1.3 mb of internal memory after 25 reminders or so it is telling me memory is full ,is there any other way since i have got many birthday reminders and this is very important to me is there any other way ,,,
February 12, 2009 at 1:55 pm
@Yogesh: I don’t think there is any other way. If birthday reminders are important to you, you must try and cut down your other memory usages. I don’t think this would work for sure, but it’s worth a try. You can cut down on using phone memory for storing messages, other sort of reminders, etc… It might help but I can’t say for sure.
February 25, 2009 at 12:28 pm
hi raamji,
i have got a new problem now with my phone ,the sound clarity of my music is gone very low i mean the volume when i listen without my earphone before it was louder now its gone very low i tried coping new songs but its the same ,should i format the data card ….pls reply
February 25, 2009 at 1:22 pm
@Yogesh: Did you check the volume level in your phone. By mistake you might have reduced your volume. Press Up/Down button in the mp3 player to increase/reduce volume.
Another thing is you might have noticed that the speaker is on the back of the phone. So if you keep the phone down flat on its back on some surface, the sound coming out will be greatly reduced. But if you keep the phone inverted, you will notice that the sound volume is quite high.
Check if one of the above might be your problem. Otherwise take it to the Motorola authorized service center. If it is a genuine problem they’ll take care of it for sure.

it only charges but doesnt show when go to my computer.. please help….
and also wat have i to do if i want to browse on the phone itself…
July 8, 2009 at 2:22 am
@funkiii:
after installing drivers, disconnect wire and reconnect phone to usb
While connecting to PC, the phone should be on main display screen, also called home screen (the first sceen you notice on your cell phone).. make sure to unlock the keypad of the phone if you have set.
if the above condition is satisfied (and connected properly to the PC) the a dialogue box appears on the home screen,
“Connect phone as storage device?”
with options yes and no,
click on yes,
then it will say
“please wait…..
connecting phone as storage device”
then your screen will go white with following text,
“In storage mode,
no regular phone activities can be done.”
this means its correctly connected to PC..
Check if one of the above might be your problem. Otherwise take it to the Motorola authorized service center. If it is a genuine problem they’ll take care of it for sure.

Hi, Ramji
It is wonderful to see a blog space for MotoYuva W230 which acts like a FAQ for new Usres. I have purchased this mobile at chennai from Univercell @ T.Nagar a 3 weeks back and trying to undrrstand the phone with the help of your Blog. In fact it is an excellant phone for the that type of Pricing Rs.2300/- including SIM without Memory card.
In fact, I have purchased the Sandisk 2GB memory card and inserted into the phone as per direction of Motorola User Guide. The phone is connected to my PC as a Storage device and I could transfer music and video files to the memory card. The files that were transferred are upto 83.7MB. Tile then verything went like a textbook narration.
When i started the pleasure of listening to music that were stored in the Memory card, lo! the problem started.
When I select the left softkey on the Home of the phone, it takes me to Music Library. When I press the central button with Red ring in the directional keypad, a fleeting message is displayed as :
” Please wait. Connecting to Device”
and vanishes immediately and takes me to the phone memory. I tried all combinations suggested by few of my friends who are using different brands but no use.
It is almost 3 weeks, I am yet to listen to the beautiful music I have transferred to this phone(Micro SD Memory) when the instrument has very good music reproduction at that low cost.
Can you help in this regards. You may either contact me on my mobile – 09381162200 or Landline 044-23720569 after 8:00pm any day of the week or forward your solution to my mail ids: techsathya@gmail.com; techsathya@yahoo.com
With warm regards,
R.Sathya Moorthy
August 3, 2009 at 12:32 pm
@Sathya : A few people are having problems with the phone related to the memory card and transferring files. But you said you were able to transfer music files to your memory card. So I feel the problem is not with memory card or phone but with comptaibility. It might be because that type of memory card is not compatible with the phone. There are many categories and sub-categories of memory cards in the market and compatibility is a big issue when you are buying one.
Try this :
Remove the back cover and take off your memory card. Now insert it again in the slot and see if you can play music from that.
(or)
Try reading the contents of your memory card either in another phone or through a card reader. Check if you are able to view the files you have stored in it.
(or)
Try getting another type of memory card from a friend or somebody and try it out in your phone. If it works then get a similar memory card.

Dt.:05/08/2009:12:00pm
Thanks Ramji for your inputs. But the phone can read the video files from the memory card and able to display the same. or
is there any restrictions of the mp3 file size since all MP3 files copied on to the memory card is more than 1MB,ie., more than 4mts duration.
The memory card used by me is as per the specifications given by Motorola – Sandisk 2GB Micro SD card, which slips into the Phone slot without any problem.
If the compatibility is an issue then how can I identify them while buying them from the Market.
I will try your suggestion today to over come the said problem.

August 27, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Hi Ramji, It is working fine now that too without doing anything. In fact I really enjoying the Music as well as the phone. Thanks once again for your help.
In a way can you throw some light on digital photo frame. After storing the photos through pen drive an i play it on a large LCD screen for a group?
August 28, 2009 at 7:31 am
@Sathya: Digital photo frame?? I take it that you mean that separate device not related to W230, right!
Anyway a digital photo frame has an LCD screen and a memory(either inbuilt or through memory card) to store your pictures. You can store your pictures there and display it on the screen. Usually there would be two modes of displaying pictures. One would be just displaying one picture, which you select, all the time. Another mode would be the slideshow mode, where the displayed picture would keep changing at specified time intervals. This can be either in sequence or at random from a group of pictures.
An a digital photo frame will not have large display and all. It would probably have some 4 or 5 inch displays.
I hope thats answers your questions Sathya.
